Located in the center of Western Europe, Belgium is a high-income and well diversified economy. Favorable legislation, stable social and economic environment make Belgium an attractive destination for foreign financial institutions: out of 91 operating in the country there are 22 domestic banks, 12 subsidiaries of foreign banks, and 57 branches of foreign banks from 19 countries. During 2013-2019 36 banks were closed down. Consolidated banking assets of banks in Belgium 2.20 times exceed GDP. The banking sector of Belgium is highly-concentrated: 5 largest banks comprise together about 74 % of consolidated banking assets.

Established in 2004, Mediterranean Bank (Malta) is a specialist bank, focusing on provision of savings products, and wealth management and investment services. In July 2009, Mediterranean Bank was acquired by a new shareholder - a fund managed by AnaCap Financial Partners LLP, a UK private equity firm, and was recapitalised.

August 2015: Banque diamantaire anversoise

Antwerp Diamond Bank (ADB) was a small bank, serving exclusively diamond and diamond jewelry sector. The bank was operating as a subsidiary of KBC Bank NV. During financial crisis 2008-2009, KBC Bank received governmental support and made a commitment to divest from several of its subsidiaries including ADB. Because the sale of ADB could not be successfully completed, KBC Bank NV announced on September 19, 2014 the decision to run down the credit portfolio and banking activities of Antwerp Diamond Bank in a gradual and orderly manner. On July 1, 2015 ADB was absorbed into KBC Bank NV: the banking relationships with ADB have been transferred by operation of law to KBC Bank NV. Over time the activities and credit portfolio of ADB will be removed entirely from KBC's scope.

November 2015: Banque Internationale à Luxembourg

Established in 1856, Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL) is the oldest private banking group in Luxembourg. BIL Bank offers retail, private and corporate banking products and services. Banque Internationale à Luxembourg operated as a branch of Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (Luxembourg).

September 2016: Optima Bank NV

Optima Bank was established in 1991 as Optima Financial Planners NV and was focused on providing financial planning services. In December 2011 Optima Financial Planners merged with the banking activities of Ethias and continued as Optima Bank NV and thus acquired a bank licence. In September 2014 it was decided to cease its banking business and to return to financial planning. Since 7 July, 2016 Optima Bank is the bankruptcy.

September 2016: Union Bancaire Privée (Europe) SA

Union Bancaire Privée (UBP) is a Swiss private bank, providing private banking and asset management products and services for both individuals and institutional clients. Union Bancaire Privée (Europe) SA operated as a branch of Union Bancaire Privée (Europe) S.A. (Luxembourg).

In February 2015 The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) announced changes to its business model to re-focus its transaction banking services on its home markets in the United Kingdom and Ireland. August 2019: ABN AMRO Private Banking Belgium

On 30 July 2018, ABN AMRO announced the acquisition of Societe Generale Private Banking NV, the private banking subsidiary of Societe Generale in Belgium. The merger transaction was completed on 28 February 2019. On 30 August 2019, ABN AMRO Private Banking Belgium was absorbed by ABN AMRO Bank N.V.

ABN AMRO Private Banking Belgium was the 37th largest bank in Belgium in terms of total assets. In 2018 its total assets were 1 118,80 mln EUR, providing the bank with the market share of 0.11%.
