Expat Banking in Spain

15 June 2020

Spain attracts expats from around the globe, especially those looking to retire, with the weather, the lifestyle, relatively low cost of living as well as investment opportunities. However, Spain can not be considered as a tax-friendly country for expats:

Moveover, recent Covid-19 pandemic and the way it's been handled by the Spanish government, might result in further tax hikes.

Although banking services in Spain are offered not only to Spanish residents, but also to non-residents, both individuals and companies, Spanish banks usually apply more strict KYC/AML checks when onboaring non-resident customers. While it's possible to live in Spain without having a Spanish bank account, there are cases when a local account can be useful. A Spanish bank account can be opened both online and in branch. Main aspects of living in Spain as an expat and using banking products and services are listed below.

Getting a Residency. Opening a local bank account is not required when applying for a residence in Spain, including when applying for Spanish residency through Golden Visa Program. However, the Golden Visa Program assumes buying a property in Spain berofehand, so a Spanish bank account will be required through the buying process.

Buying a Property. A bank account in a Spanish bank is required when buying a property in Spain, even without a mortgage: a person wishing to buy a property has to open a bank account and transfer the money which are going to be used to finance the purchase. Spanish banks offer various mortgage options, including buy-to-let mortgages, second-home mortgages.

Paying Taxes. When employed in Spain, the relavant taxes are going to be deducted by the employer. In other cases, taxes can be paid in cash in most of bank branches in Spain, or using a Spanish bank account either through a explicit wire transfer or by specifying IBAN when filling a tax form. Paying taxes using foreign bank accounts is not possible.

Paying Utility Bills. Spanish utility companies (in particular, Endesa and Iberdrola) offer a variety of ways, including card payments and direct debits. In order to pay the invoices it is not necessary to have a Spanish Bank account and even for the direct debit the bank account can be an account in any SEPA-country.

Online Account Opening

Out of 22 banks providing retail banking products and services, 16 banks offer online account opening, while the rest 6 banks require a branch visit. Online account opening can be completed in a few minutes, but sometimes additional checks require more time. When opening an account (either online or on-site), banks will require to provide documents proving client's identity, address and income.
