Municipal credit banks in France

16 December 2018

Municipal credit banks in France are both public and credit institutions, focused on providing social loans by operating as pawnshops. The municipality where such a bank is located is the unique shareholder of the bank. Municipal credit banks loan money to a customer based on a percentage of the value of the item he/she want to pawn (for example, clothing, jewelry, household goods, housewares, motorized vehicles and tools). While municipal credit banks are legal pawnshop monopoly, they are involved in other banking activities like collecting deposits from public, providing payment services and consumer loans. There are currently 18 municipal credit banks operating in France.
